How to make iced coffee at home
We have had numerous requests for a how to article on how to create that perfect iced coffee at home. Let's face it, iced coffee at a local coffee shop is not cheap and if we can easily do it ourselves and save a few bucks, then count us in.. I mean, we are DIY'ers at heart anyways.
So let's begin. In our quest for knowledge, we decided to mix how we like to make our iced coffee for the office, with the how to of a few of our customers and the feedback we received.
The first step is somewhat subjective. You obviously have to brew great coffee beans to get a great iced coffee taste. No doubt about that and we recommend our Guts & Glory blend just for that reason. However the question we asked is when do you brew the coffee? Some of our responders said they brew it the night before so it can come to room temp before they pour it over the ice. Others including us chose to brew it in the morning before work as soon as we rise and shut the coffee pot off as soon as its brewed. Doing this will give it at least 20-30 minutes to get closer to room temp. We like the idea of a freshly brewed pot ourselves and we say, to each their own. We tried both ways and really did not notice much of a difference.
The next step in creating a great iced coffee at home is to create your own batch of syrup to add to the brew. Our ingredients and directions are below. Trust us, this way is much better than just dumping in some flavored creamer from the grocery store and calling it a day. Creating your own simple syrup is a great payoff in terms of taste.
Ingredients for simple syrup:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup of water
Directions for simple syrup:
To make the simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Let cool completely and stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract and set aside.
Once you have your syrup made you can create your iced coffee and refrigerate the left over syrup for tomorrow.
Directions for iced coffee:
- Add 1 cup coffee, at room temperature to a 12-16oz glass with a 1/3 of the glass filled with ice.
- Add the simple syrup you just made. We use anywhere from 2-3 tablespoons ourselves but you can add or take away depending on your desired sweetness level.
- We also use some half and half, preferably 2 tablespoons. Again your choice to add or takeaway based on preference.
Now all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.. Let us know your results and how you fared. You can email us at info@brewtality.coffee with any questions or comments. We will be happy to hear from you. Until then #drinkup #brewcrew #brewtalitycoffee
